Police blocked off the area around Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore where the world's top fashion houses have their shops in central Paris, not far from the Elysee presidential palace.

The man, in his late 30's and described as calm but psychologically fragile, threatened three staff members and held them hostage for about seven hours before being grabbed by police.
