Birkenstock steps into the beauty industry

Beauty products are just a stepping stone from footwear, and Birkenstock is going full steam ahead with its new range, ‘Birkenstock Natural Care.’ The cosmetic products will be formulated from cork oak, the flagship material used for its iconic shoes.

The German label, founded in 1774, and known for its flip-flops, sandals and orthopaedic clogs, claims that suberin granules – a substance found in cork – has elastic properties for a lifting effect.

To develop the line, designed and manufactured in Germany, the group, which employs 3800 people worldwide, has created a new body under the name ‘Birkenstock Cosmetics.’

The range of beauty products will see 28 products for men and women, across five lines, made available in autumn 2017. The lines will include skincare products, anti-ageing serums, shower gel and foot creams. A online shop is in the works, but no further details on the brand’s selective distribution have yet been released.

Besides cork, the new products boast all-natural components (verified by Bdih Cosmos Natural) including argan oil, baobab extract, moringa and elderberry. Parabens, paraffin and silicon are not amongst the sustainable ingredients used by the brand.
