Gahcho Kué, the world's largest new diamond mine in the last 13 years, has officially begun production on 2nd March, following the inaugural ceremony held last year on 20th September. The mine is owned as a joint venture between the De Beers group (51%) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%), and is expected to yield approximately 54 million carats of rough diamonds in the course of its useful life.

"Today marks a historic moment for De Beers in Canada, said Bruce Cleaver, CEO of the South African group, thanks to the crucial contribution which Gahcho Kué will bring to the group's global output. The fact that the mine has reached this milestone within budget and even ahead of schedule is proof of the success of this collaboration. Furthermore, the mine is expected to bring socio-economic benefits to the Northwest Territories' economy worth over CAD5.3 billion during its operational life."

Gahcho Kué is an open pit operation, mining three kimberlite pipes in sequence, and is located approximately 280 km [174 mi] north-east of Yellowknife in the Canadian Northwest Territories. It will employ 530 full-time workers, with two-week rotation shifts.
