Dolce & Gabbana play with a full deck

This season Dolce & Gabbana played poker. A collection where practically every look carried a playing card reference presented on a sunny Sunday in Milan.

A front-row crammed with millennial Instagram stars – most of whom had performed the previous night at the duo’s Secret Show, ready-to-wear dedicated to evening wear.

Entitled Queen of Hearts, this spring 2018 collection had lots of, excuse the pun, heart. With one-eyed nobles seen in profile appearing on sequined cocktails; bouffant faille gowns and Renaissance robes. Yet, in a sense, the silhouettes and color palette were little changed from previous shows by Dolce & Gabbana. Though, the sense of humor remains acute, as a series of vegetable print coats – meaning 18-inch long sweet peas – reminded us.

Security was intense at the show – with thousands of Milanese kids outside desperate to catch a glimpse of the millennial influencers. The actual invitation had a special chip that had to be scanned before entrance to the show was permitted. Inside, practically a scrum as the paparazzi fought for shots of Cameron Dallas or Bianca Brandolini. At one stage, Anna Wintour summoned over several publicists demanding that they usher away overly ardent photographers. They did.

Before a show, which climaxed, classically for this house, with 60 sexy widows marching down the runway. Some things never change no matter what cards you are dealt. Call it as One Eyed Jack season.
