Tommy Hilfiger decidedly blue for spring

For spring, Tommy Hilfiger is delving into his history to create a collection that is all about blue. The American brand has applied an overarching theme to its denim and sportswear lines, dubbed "True to the blue."

"My career began with denim and chambray, so these fabrics are key to our brand’s heritage," said Tommy Hilfiger in a statement. “When I was 17, two friends and I bought bell-bottom jeans in New York City and took them back to Elmira, our hometown in upstate New York, where cool big city styles were impossible to find. We sold the jeans from the trunk of my Volkswagen Bug, and it was a hit! Later, we opened a chain of stores called People's Place. And I started to experiment with chambray, used jeans, new jeans cuts and washes. Since the launch of my eponymous brand in 1985, these fabrics and my color palette have remained an important part of our brand DNA."

The brand created two interpretations of this era. Hilfiger Denim reinterprets pieces from the archives of the brand's founder with jackets, dungarees, shirts, shorts and t-shirts. And everything in denim, of course.

For the sportswear line, Tommy Hilfiger used more chambray while keeping the focus on indigo. Here again are shirts and t-shirts but also blazers and accessories with original details like patchworks in blue. To a unique feel to the collection, the brand enlisted the creative services of several industrial designers: French Paul Venaille and Benjamin Tortiger; American Debra Folz; American-Japanese Jonah Takagi; and Americans O & G Studio Jonathan Glatt and Sara Ossana.

The collection for men, women and children will be available in stores and online starting April 14. As kick off to the launch, Tommy Hilfiger will host a contest on social media that invites fans of the brand to post older photos of themselves with denim pieces on Instagram or Twitter from April 17 to May 9, 2014. The grand prize is a trip for two to California.
