As U.S. protests against racial injustice continue, more brands speak out and donate
Across the United States, protests and riots persisted on Tuesday, despite city-wide curfews and multiple reports of continual police brutality, as many Americans demand an end to racial injustice.
Meanwhile, companies continued to issue statements of support, with many choosing to take their efforts one step further through monetary donations.
The CFDA showed its support for protestors in an announcement posted last week, sharing additional messages of empathy from Tory Burch; Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond; Marc Jacobs; Jhoan Sebastian Grey; jewelry brand Catbird; Zac Posen; Ty Hunter; Diane von Furstenberg; Norma Kamali; and Alexander Wang.
"The CFDA stands in solidarity with those who fight for racial equality and justice," the organization wrote.
"People all over the country are taking to the streets and social media to protest police violence, and honor the Black lives lost. The CFDA honors all the Black lives lost."
The CFDA further shared a list of educational resources and grassroots organizations to donate to, in order to support protestors and organizations fighting racial injustice, including the Minnesota Freedom Fund, the George Floyd Memorial Fund and Mapping Police Violence, among others.
The Copenhagen-based brand shared that it will donate a total of $100,000 to several organizations, including Black Lives Matter, the NAACP and the ACLU.
"We know this is not enough," the brand wrote. "We must continue to listen, research, and educate ourselves about systematic injustice and state sanctioned violence against Black people globally."
Beauty brand Biossance pledged to donate $100,000 to the ACLU, the Minnesota Freedom Fund, Color of Change, and Black Lives Matter.
"In times like these, it's important to take a stand for the things that matter," the brand wrote. "Biossance stands for equality, we stand for change, and we stand alongside those who are hurting the most right now."
Cosmetics brand E.l.f. made its own statement of solidarity on Instagram, sharing additional statements of support from Target, Ulta, NYX, MAC Cosmetics, Maybelline, Fenty Beauty, Becca Cosmetics, Clinique and Urban Decay.
In addition, the company announced its pledge to donate $25,000 to Color of Change.
Millennial beauty giant Glossier announced its plans to donate a whopping $1 million to organizations working to fight racial injustice, pledging $500k across organizations including Black Lives Matter; the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund; The Equal Justice Initiative; The Marsha P. Johnson Institute; and We The Protestors.
An additional $500k will be used to create grants for black-owned beauty businesses. Glossier said it will release more information on the initiative in June.
"We Stand in solidarity with the fight against systemic racism, white supremacy, and the historic oppression of the black community," the company wrote. "Black Lives Matter."
Another beauty brand to make a hefty contribution, Anastasia Beverly Hills pledged to donate a total of $1 million across organizations.
"This weekend, we began with a donation of $100,000 across the following organizations: Black Lives Matter, The Innocence Project, The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Black Visions Collective, and the Marshall Project."
The company further appeared to announce a more long-term initiative to support black-owned beauty businesses.
"We are taking the time internally to discuss new initiatives that will financially support Black owned businesses and artists in the beauty industry. When the details have been finalized, we will announce the process for submission or nomination, and we will update you monthly on recipients."
Athleticwear brand Lululemon said it will donate $100,000 to the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
"We haven’t always got it right," the brand wrote on Instagram. "Over the years it made us question if we had a right to speak up. And we are privileged to have a voice and a platform. Know we are not indifferent. Far from it. We are passionate about every single human being valued."
Fast-fashion retailer H&M announced on June 1 that it would donate $500,000 to the NAACP, Color of Change and the ACLU.
Marc Jacobs Beauty
In addition to designer Marc Jacobs expressing support on his personal Instagram account, Marc Jacobs Beauty announced its plans to donate an undisclosed amount to the Black Lives Matter movement.
"Additionally, we invite you to sign petitions with the @naacp--the nation's first and largest grassroots based civil rights organization--and at @changedotorg to shine a light on these issues like so many others already have," the brand wrote.
Hair care brand Devacurl announced that it will donate $50,000 to Black Lives Matter, and will share "resources and links to organizations making an impact on our Instagram Story."
