The donation will be made to Food Banks Canada and Kids Help Phone, each of whom will receive $500,000.

The Hudson's Bay Foundation will also match donations as it encourages Canadians to support these charities, through March 31.

"Through the Hudson's Bay Foundation we have an opportunity to provide critical support to Canadians at a time of unprecedented need," said Iain Nairn, president, Hudson's Bay.

"This commitment will directly impact the well-being of our communities, customers and associates ensuring access to real-time mental health support for our children, as well as helping alleviate the stress for families who rely on these vital organizations everyday.”

Both organizations have reported an increased need for services and resources across Canadian communities.

Canada’s iconic retailer said late Tuesday that it would close all its stores across the country, as the Covid-19 crisis progresses. Stores are expected to remain closed for two weeks at which point operations will be reassessed.

The company said that during the closure “store associates will be paid for all scheduled shifts that were planned for the two weeks.”

Furthermore, like many other retailers, the Hudson’s Bay will be extending its return policy by 30 days.
