It looks like Westfield is planning to add to its giant Stratford City shopping mall in London with documents lodged with the London Legacy Development Corporation suggesting an extra 150,000 sq ft of retail space is on the cards.

Westfield Stratford City is already London's largest mall but could get even bigger - Westfield Stratford City

The new space will be created in a basement area below anchor store M&S and currently occupied by two levels of car parking space. Not that this means a reduction in overall parking spaces as the company will add additional areas for visitors’ cars elsewhere.

Stratford City is already the largest shopping centre in London but Westfield’s head of development for the UK and Europe,John Burton, told the mall’s local newspaper, the Newham Recorder, that the new space is being driven by strong demand from both UK and international retailers. He also said that it would include both retail and leisure options.

The company plans to add 75 news stores and kiosks and its planning document said the extension would “have a significant positive impact on the vitality and viability of Stratford.”

The mall, which has been open or five years, has proved a major success since its debut, hosting more than 46m customers annually and seeing £1.1bn in retail sales a year.

It offers a mix of value, fast fashion, mid-market and high-end retailers such as Primark, Reiss, The Kooples and Mulberry. However, its luxury offer is fairly sparse with Wetsfield hosting most of its luxury tenants like Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Prada in its White City mall across town.
